View of the vineyard at 380 metres

380 metres

A vineyard unlike any other in Provence

At 380 metres, in a natural bowl facing the Bessillon, the vines of Château La Calisse enjoy an exceptional microclimate. The cool nights of the Var hinterland slow ripening and preserve a natural acidity that is rare in this region.

The result: tauter, more precise wines that keep their freshness even in the height of a Provençal summer. A signature that nothing added in the cellar could ever reproduce.

Limestone soil of the vineyard

The terroir

Limestone soil built for tension

The estate’s soils are limestone and well drained, typical of the Haut-Var. The vines struggle just enough to concentrate their aromas without ever being stressed. Their roots reach deep, seeking moisture in a mineral subsoil.

All around, the garrigue — rosemary, thyme, lavender — lends its scents to the air the grapes breathe. It is not a detail. It is part of the wine.

The estate’s grape varieties

The grape varieties

Syrah, Grenache, Vermentino

The reds are built on Syrah and Grenache — two varieties that find their finest expression at altitude. Syrah brings structure and spice; Grenache brings roundness and fruit.

Vermentino — a white variety rarely found in Provence — is the estate’s signature. At this altitude it gives whites of exceptional minerality and length. It is the wine that the Guide Hachette has singled out most often.

Hand harvesting in the Château La Calisse vineyard

Tending the vines

Organic since 1996, by conviction

No herbicides, no synthetic pesticides. The soils are worked mechanically, the rows grassed over, the vines watched plot by plot. Ecocert certification, renewed every year for almost thirty years.

Organic farming at this altitude, with such restrained yields, is not a marketing stance. It is the only way to obtain the wine this terroir can give. Our commitments →
